About Malay

Malay is a branch of the Austronesian (Malayo-Polynesian) language family. It is spoken mainly in Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, Singapore, East Timor, and parts of Thailand. There are around 290 million people who speak this language. As Malay is the official language of several states and regions, it also has several different names. While Malaysian refer to this language as either Bahasa Malaysia (“Malaysian language”) or Bahasa Melayu (“Malay language”), it is called Bahasa Indonesia (“Indonesian language”) in Indonesia.

Language Characteristics

What’s special about this language?

Malay is a branch of the Austronesian language family. It has relatively close relationships with several Sumatra languages, such as Minangkabau, Kerintji, Rejang.

Though Malay has various dialects, northern and southern dialects are the 2 most common ones. While the northern dialect, referred to as Malay, is commonly spoken in Malaysia, Singapore, and Brunei, the southern one is mainly spoken in Indonesia. It is the official language of Indonesia and the basis of standard Malay.

This language is rich in pronunciation. It follows the Subject-Verb-Object (SVO) order like English. However, it is possible to use it in other word order, depending on the emphasis and style of the speaker.
